The Prototype Cup Germany started the race weekend with a one-hour free practice session at the Dekra Lausitzring. Valentino Catalano (18/Westheim) made it clear early on in the session that the only way to achieve the best time would be through him and his teammate Markus Pommer (33/Untereisesheim, both Gebhardt Motorsport). He took the lead, which remained in the hands of the Gebhardt duo even after the driver change to Pommer. In the second half of free practice, Julien Apothéloz (23/CHE, BWT Mücke Motorsport) got closer to the leader, which Pommer took as motivation to increase his lap time again. But Apothéloz didn't allow himself to be intimidated and also stepped up. In the end, Catalano / Pommer had a lead of 0.354 seconds over Apothéloz and his team partner Riccardo Leone Cirelli (16/ITA, BWT Mücke Motorsport). “Free practice went perfectly, the car was perfect. We had a good qualifying simulation and were consistently fast overall. Actually everything went according to plan; “We have to do it again later in the qualifying sessions,” said Pommer, summarizing his free practice session.

Apothéloz, who had lost in the fight for the top spot, was also not dissatisfied. “We already had a lot of driving time during the test yesterday and today we also tried a few things. I'm optimistic for the two qualifying sessions that are still on the program today. The weekend with the three races will be intense, which I think is great. After all, we’re all here to race.”

Third place in the free practice session, which took place in sunny weather, went to Felipe Laser (34/Leipzig) / Klaus Abbelen (63/Barweiler, both Frikadelli Racing Team) ahead of Torsten Kratz (53/Mönchengladbach) / Danny Soufi (20/USA, both Konrad Motorsport). Sven Barth (43/Eberbach) and Maxime Dirickx (20/BEL, both Gebhardt Motorsport) completed the top five. “This route is not easy, but I am happy with my progress. I hope to be able to improve even further in the following sessions and get closer and closer to the top,” said the young Belgian, who went straight from karting to the Prototype Cup Germany.
